Profile:

Childhood

Born 10th October 1949 at Mwanda Village, Taita Taveta County. At a young age, looked after family livestock with elder brothers in the wilderness of Tsavo grasslands, playing hide and seek with lions and elephants.

Academic Education

Primary and secondary school in the counties of Taita Taveta and Kwale.

Post-secondary school a B.A. Degree in Theology (1978, Pontifical University, Rome, Italy) and

M.A. Degree in Development Studies from Antioch University, Ohio, USA (1982).

Highlights of professional work: participatory development approaches

Set up and developed a community education program for the Catholic Diocese of Mombasa between 1978 and 1981; member of a national training team under the Kenya Catholic Secretariat to promote participatory development methodologies among development workers in most catholic dioceses in Kenya (1980 – 1983).

Highlights of professional work: human rights and civic education

Set up and developed the outreach program of Kituo Cha Sheria (The Legal Advice Centre), Nairobi, underlining interactive processes in legal and civic education activities for transformation of society; supporting community based initiatives.

Sabbatical Years 2002 – 2003

  1. Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Law School, Boston, Massachusetts – USA,
  2. Research associate, Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK, with three months in Haiti and the Philippines.

Significant outputs of the sabbatical study leave:

  • a paper for the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) to assist the organization develop programs using a holistic approach to human rights
  • (ii) design and development of a course outline on rights approach to development for the Tangaza College as a part time lecturer.

Highlights of professional work, governance and environment

Co-founder, Taita Taveta County Development Forum (TTCDF) in 2011 to contribute towards good governance, Major achievements of TTCDF included:

  1. Board member, Kenya Human Rights Commission (1998 – 2004)
  2. Board member, Centre for Development and Governance (current)
  3. Member of AGM (representing Coast region of Kenya), Kituo Cha Sheria (current)
  4. Member of the Steering Committee, ELOG (Election Observation Group) – current.

Life Commitment To Environment, Especially, The Tsavo Ecosystem
